When I press the brake pedal at a stop light or a stop sign and then release the brake and apply it again, the brakes are hard to push and do not stop the car. I have to push really hard just to get the slightest results for the brake. Is this the master cylinder?

it sounds more like the brake booster then the master cylinder. change the check valve in the booster and see what you have.

Good chance it is the brake booster (bad) or the vacuum line to the brake booster(leaking). Brake diagnostics at a shop can accurately tell you the answer.

what alex said...but I thought if one of the vacuum hoses were leaking it would cause a stalling problem due to vacuum leak.
