Lick My What?

I have just received a used blackberry 9700 from my friend. On his laptop everything works fine, however whenever I try to connect the usb to the blackberry my laptop would recognize it and start charging but Blackberry Desktop does not recognize it for whatever reason. I have tried many things, such as restarting my laptop, taking out the battery of my blackberry and restarting it but nothing seems to work. Whenever I connect via bluetooth it works, however I cannot send files without it being connected via USB. Please help! Full points to the best answer.
