Help with bike purchase please?

My current bike is a 1968 BSA 441 Shooting Star and is getting a bit 'tired'. To that end it will be going through a refurbishing process this summer so I don't have a ride.

So; I need another bike. I've been thinking of getting another bike for the longer rides anyway, and now is as good a time as any.

I will be looking at a barely used Harley Sportster next month but I would like to consider other machines as well.

I'm 58 years old and weigh in at 200 pounds.
Average ride length will be 200-250 miles
I like to work on my own bike(s)
I only ride one up

Anyone care to recommend a ride under a 900 cc's. No crotch rockets please (my back can't take it and they don't suit my riding style anyway)
 
you could go another way and get a big ''trailie''...
xt600/xtz660,big thumpers like your used to,bloody comfortable plus there go anywhere,....i find old tracks and explore mountains on mine...
