for my art history class i have to write an essay on how knowledge of the original setting of a piece of art contributes to a more complete understanding of the piece of work.

can anyone give me any artworks that have been moved from their original location? and examples how knowing about the original setting helps understand the work of art more

please and thank you.
i'm having a tough time with this.

I remember seeing Michaelangelo's Pieta in New York. The setting was the piece all by itself and you had to ride on this kind of mat that passed by it.

It certainly was exciting. the security was beefed up. as far as that setting went, it enhanced the feeling that you were seeing something very very precious.

Now, if I saw an art piece in a piazza in Italy, it could be precious but there would be a different element. I would be thinking, how many Italians went about their business every day passing this statue. How many teenagers hung out by the fountain at night when they really had no where else to go. Maybe they shared their first kiss under the watchful eye of that statue.

maybe their grandparent's funeral procession passed through the square with the statue right there.

same thing with things like the sistine chapel. You think to yourself, all those years ago this man hung upside down and dipped his paint into the pot and PAINTED THIS! how mind blowing is that.

I don't know if this helps or is even right. It is just what I think
