West Virginia which separated from Virginia in 1863.
Virginia had joined the Confederacy, the CSA, and
the Western counties of Virginia, with Union president
Lincoln's support allowed these territories to separate
from Virginia and form a new state in 1863, West Virginia.
Since the Union, the USA, won the war, West Virginia's
independence as a state was accepted.
