Help with 3 phone compatibility?

My sister and I both received new phones as a part of the cap plan from the mobile service provider, 3. We both want to swap phones. Is this possible (we both want to keep our SIM cards to keep our numbers)? Or is the SIM already locked specifically to that phone? I don't want to have to go to a 3 shop to ask for the SIMs to be locked to a different phone.
