HELP, Whats wrong with my fish?!?

Since this morning it has been laying on the bottom with its head in the gravel, presumed dead.

Just now i tried to remove it but it spasmed and struggled to the other side of the tank where it is now laying gasping for air.

What could this be? What shall i do?

P.S They are small/medium tropical fish.
 
We need some more details:
1. what species of fish
2. what size tank and what equipment is running on it
3. full water parameter readings including ammonia etc
4. how long has the tank been set up

I would initially say there's a problem with water quality - have you tried a partial water change - did this effect the fish at all?
 
peeps do need more info to tell you whats going on. but if its laying flat on the bottom of the tank it doesnt sound too good. if it survives until the morning take a photo to the lfs and they may be able to give you a medicin.
