This morning I was cleaning and carried a huge load of wash upstairs, after that I felt a little wierd in the head and out of breath kind of. I know it's probably from being out of shape because I haven't exercised in 8 months because of always worrying something is wrong with me. Anyway I took Xanax .25 and after about 1 1/2 hours it didn't seem to work for me so I feel like my heart is racing and lightheaded and afraid i'm going to pass out or have a heart attack.
Has anyone ever taken xanax and it didn't work for them or maybe there's really something wrong with me and I should go to the dr. it's really freaking me out.

Yeah, sometimes it didn't work for me either. Then I would take another one.I don't know if you're supposed to do that or not,but it helped me.It may mean you are getting used to the medication and need to up the dosage or try something else.

Hi. I just joined the board since I see so many people here going through exactly what I've been suffering most of my life. I'm getting close to 60, and I haven't died from my anxiety or panic attacks yet, though countless times (since childhood) I've been certain I was about to die.

RedInTheHead, remeraber that a racing heart, lightheadedness and a feeling like you're fainting or having a heart attack can just be the classic symptoms of a panic attack. You might have gotten hyperventilated (check out "chronic hyperventilation syndrome") by carrying that big load upstairs and thus gotten the symptoms going. Since we anxiety/panic sufferers are hypersensitized, every change in our body seems dramatic and even scary. Then fear quickly makes it all worse. Hey, been there, done that, many, many times.

I've taken xanax for years, and its effect on me is quite variable. When I'm just a little anxious, only .25 mg makes me calm and sleepy; when I'm having a panic attack, .5 mg just calms me down without making me sleepy; but if I've just had a large meal, I sometimes don't feel any effects from even 1 mg for hours. But you might try holding your .25 mg under your tongue until it's completely dissolved - that seems to get it into my blooRABtream a little faster if my stomach is already full.

Thanks everyone. Sometimes I feel like i'm crazy. I can't believe how this has taken over my life. I've even gained weight because i'm afraid to exercise for fear of dying of a heart attack and I used to go to the gym 5 days a week. Hopefully in time it'll all go away :)

Hi again, Red.

Just tossing out a thought here. Have you recently taken lots of antibiotics, or had any yeast/fungal infections or bowel problems? I've been told that this might make anxiety or panic worse. Of course, this is certainly not the only possibility - would be nice if panic attacks were that simple. But whatever is messing with you, I sincerely wish it gone and that you have greater calm, happiness, and health very soon! I sure understand what you're going through!
