Thanks to all those who do? In the short story, “The Tell-Tale Heart”, Edgar Allan Poe establishes the main character as a disoriented narrator, evoking an eerie, chaotic atmosphere while laying out a vicious murder plot. Instilling dark imageries throughout the novel, the author sets a dreary landscape parallel to the malignant intention the character beholds. As the story slowly progresses, the author employs a suspenseful tone thorough repetitive diction as the narrator cautiously proceeds toward fulfilling his ultimate target, thereby gradually building up the curiosity of the readers towards the climax. Furthermore, as the antagonist’s plans to seek revenge of the old man’s “vulture eyes” by cruelly slaughtering his prey, Poe employs dramatic irony to portray how the narrator repeatedly tries to convince the reader of his credibility as a writer, while claiming to possess a well balanced state of mind. To display the narrator innarrator incessantly denies the “madness” of his brutal crime, by assuring himself and the reader of his misdeed as only an “acuteness of sense”, rather than a notorious murder.
