Help please - need to take photos that are minimum 300dpi and 4"x 5"....no clue...

...about photography!? I have signed up for a phptography workshop and I need to have some images with me on the first day.

Do I need a fancy camera or is this regular quality?

Could I take these on, say , an iphone or a digital camera that I use for snapshots?

How will I know if I have the right dpi, do I need photoshop to check it?

THanks so much, I am a COMPLETE newbie!

Also, any websites where I can learn a crash course in the basics?

I mean a crash course in terminology etc, so I wont be there staring blankly at them on the first day.

I appreciate that the skills will take a long time to learn and can't be crammed overnight :)
