I've finished my reading and I'm still stuck on a couple of questions.
1. A defendant who does not appear in court at the specified time forfeits?
A-The right to an attorney B-Probation C-The right to testify D-Bail
2. A person who cannot get through their day without drugs or alcohol, suffers from..
A-Substance abuse B-Addiction C-Chemical dependency D-Intoxication.
(Number tricked me because I feel like it could be either A, B or C so if you could explain to me why it would be the answer that'd be great!)
3. Annie Carney is arrested for shoplifting a $45 camera. Will she be tried in a small claims court? Why?

#1 - is D - Bail. Being released on bail allows you to be free until your case is decided in court. Failing to appear in court will result in the bail that was posted to be revoked. Bail is money that is paid to the court that guarantees that you will appear at a future date.

#2 is C - Chemical Dependence. There are many forms of addiction such as gambling that are not chemical dependence, there for, all chemical dependency is an addiction, not all addiction is a chemical dependency.

#3 - No. Small claims court is reserved for civil complaints, not criminal. Had Annie not been arrested, the store owner might have been limited to taking Annie to small claims court but once she was arrested, it became a criminal matter. In any case, a person is not "tried" in civil court.

However, someone who commits a crime can also be taken to civil court. O.J. Simpson was not convicted of a crime but was found liable in civil court for the death of his wife and had to pay damages to her surviving family for the "wrongful death" of his wife.
