I think I've blown a bearing in my filter or something. I had a horrible noise coming out of it and the fish were going nuts. I've switched it off and had a look but can't see anything immediately wrong with it. It's reasonably clean, no clogs or anything.

It's a 10 gallon tank, 2 goldfish, 2 danios and 1 bristlenose. Levels are lovely, gravel had a good vaccy on Sunday, there's plenty of aeration and a few plants. It's been cycled for 3 months.

I cant do much about it until late tomorrow afternoon. At a push I could do it first thing in the morning but it is that urgent? or will it be ok if I leave it until later.?

Thankyou :)

Clean tank, plenty of aeration will be good for 24 hours no problem. Keep your current filter medium wet, that will be useful to seed the new filter.

Horrible noise is normally the impeller, which is the magnet with the blades attached. Check that with the filter out of the water, so you can see that it's spinning free. If you had blown something it would have died on you straight away, more likely the impeller is fouled. Dog hair stopped one of mine and when I figure out how the dog got in and out of the tank I will let the world know :o)

Check the impeller. That's usually what makes the noise, usually something will either get wrapped around it, or something gets trapped in there blocking it from spinning.

Keep the filter media from the filter wet and put an airstone in the tank. Get a new filter tomorrow and put the old media in the new filter.

In an average 10g the fish would be ok, but yours is overstocked with 3 very heavy waste producers (the pleco and 2 Goldfish) which could lead to problems in the short term.

Don't feed your fish until you've got the new filter up and running.

In the future those 2 Goldfish will need at least a 35 gallon to themselves (as they are coldwater) and the Pleco and Danios at least a 15-20 gallon for them (as they are tropical, the Pleco gets too large for a 10g and Danios are too active for a 10g).

I think your fish will be ok untill tomorow. I just lost power and its been off for 36 hours. i have 3 tanks and they are doing fine, accept for their temperatures are at 70 degrees. (a little too cool for my liking)
Do you have a air stone? a bubble bar and air pump? these are crucial to adding oxygen to your tanks, and will help if you dont have a filter running. :D
