help my car stopped running and i thought it was the battery?

so i got a jump and sparks came out as it was so charged but when it stopped the sign showed the battery power was almost nothing.What could it be the starter? I am a only parent and i am trying to get an idea what it might be.It's a 89 buick .Thanks in advance
 
turn on your headlights. do they look dim or normal. if dim, try charging the battery, if not, check the starter. if the battery wont hold a charge it is bad, if you know the battery is charged and it wont start, starter or start relay. if it will start and the battery is charged but runs down fast, the altenator is bad. if you know the battery is charged and the altenator is good, starter or start relay. i would start by making sure the battery is charged and connected well with no corrosion, ive seen a lot of cars not start because the post were corroded.
 
It might be the battery. If it starts up after being jumped off its either the battery or the alternator. Take it to a Discount auto parts if there is one near you, And they can tell you, and it won't cost you anything.
