You cannot download binaries using thunderbird, you can only read text articles.

That is incorrect. AOL does not offer any free news services.

You can download newsgroups, but you'll need to pay a third-party such as Giganews for access.

Yea, AOL dumped their Usenet service a few years ago.

*loL* aoL was the first usenet provider i had access too. *haha* i remember them days.

Just fork up the few dollars a month for premium service - it's worth it!!!
