Charlie wouldn’t receive his monthly allowance from home for another week. Meanwhile he had to pay his room and board or wind up on the street. When he explained matters to his landlady, she said she’d accept as payment a small gold chain he owned—a chain of seven precious links. To make sure he got dinner all week long, Charlie offered to hand over one link of the chain each day. She agreed, but on condition that he cut only one link of the chain.
