Help me get data off card; help with hotsync

Hello,

I opened jacksprat on my T3 yesterday and the screen went from normal to half grey, half white. I could not make it stop, so I pulled my card out and did a hard reset. As expected, lost everything. I had just done a backup onto my card, so I hope this saves my butt.

Problems:

1. Now I cannot hotsync -- my computer tells me the port is busy -- my device tells me the port is being used -- but it is not. What's this about?

2. I cannot restore my card as I cannot hotsync, but also because my program for the backup is gone -- I think it was cardbackup. Now what do I do?

Thanks for your help,
James

JackSprat - well depending what setting you changed with it - might have removed something critical to hot sync.

Hard reset the device again and reboot the PC.

See if the connection is then re-established and try a hot sync.

What happened after you hard reset the device? Did it come back to the Palm start up screen or did it remain gray. You said you lost everything so I assume it came back. But if during the spratting - you deleted something inadvertingly from ROM that's critical.......you are goofed, IMHO.

If you can not reestablish the hotsync port - then you'll probably have to send it to Palm for repairs - or borrow someone else's T3 and install Jack Sprat on it and attempt to beam back the lost file from the known good T3.

Well, there's good news and bad news - don't panic Jim.

1. You should have had a copy of Cardbackup on the card - this is advised when you first start the program.

2. If you have a card reader, put CardBackup on the card and try that. You may have to re-enter serial number. I fear you have lost more than what can be restored from the card, as it does not back up ROM databases or apps. There is also a copy of the program from original purchase/download or in your archive/backup folder - try sticking that on the card.

3. A "white screen" on a T3 using JackSprat means you have had a rare "T3 abysmal crash." Which version number of Sprat do you have? I believe the lat(er) version was 3.0beta5. Earlier than this - and that's why you had the possible problem. When you say "you opened JackSprat" yesterday - how long had you had it/been using it? Normally it is deleted after doing its job. Was this a "second pass" of Spratting? Perhaps after deleting extra languages but no apps yet? That can make a difference too.

4. The solution to the white screen normally is to leave the white screen on, let the battery die, which forces a hard reset. Often the ROM has to be reflashed. I'm surprised it even LET YOU performa hard reset. The fact that it did, and that you didn't have a "freeze-up" is actually a good sign, and it may have NOTHING to do with JackSprat but rather another problem, or something you put in flash that wasn't friendly. Consult your documentation or Brayder's help site for removing something from flash that is "troublemsome." That may be all you have to do. You were given several warnings about backing up your ROM either to PC or card when first opening JackSprat the first time - hope you heeded those.

5. Beaming "good ROM" from a "good T3" to yours under Sprat is not possible. Nor is installing JackSprat on someone else's T3 without registering it to them - which is impossible under your user name, I'm afraid. You're better of re-flashing and either NOT using Sprat again, or having a 2nd stab at it provided you FULLY back up ROM first to PC and SD Card, and make sure you have latest version. I'm sorry you had trouble, but this may not be JS related.
