help me fix my transmission in a 1994 ford taurus?

my car drives good until i shut the engine off. when i restart it the gear selector moves through the gears but does not go into gear.(all gear selections act like neutral) it's a 1994 ford taurus please help
 
when the car is " doing it's thing " and you are on a level surface , check the tranny fluid level , leave it running , in P , and pull the tranny dipstick , wipe , re-insert then pull again to read the level , if you have enough and it smells burnt it's $$$ time .
 
The 91-95 Fords Taurus transmissions are crap. If this is the first time you've had a problem, you are lucky. Mine went out with 60,000 miles on it.

If you want to keep the POS, find a local ATRA certified transmission shop to take it to.

If it has a 3.8L engine in it, they are prone to head gasket failure. just thank the UAW for having junky parts in American cars. All the money had to go to their retirement/furlough/health care deals.
