I'm applying to American University, and no one will proof read my essay for acceptance. Can someone read it and tell me what you think?
The question they asked is... American University embraces the motto: Ideas into Action; Action into Service. How do you embody this philosophy?
Nineteen years ago my mother gave birth to a baby boy, and in my parents’ eyes was hope. I was the first from either of my parents’ families born on American soil. For this reason, I thank my parents for giving me the opportunities that were stripped from many Cambodians after the Khmer Rouge Genocide. My families’ background encouraged me to educate myself about political power and understand how it may affect people. In college, I take my education seriously, but at the same, I participated in numerous co-curricular activities to improve the college experience for the student body.
From the start of my freshmen semester I sense that students lacked the excitement I had for college. Therefore, I established myself as a Student Ambassador, because with this role I was able to present my ideas to the President of Orange County Community College. My goal was to give students an enjoyable environment because it is important that they understand that fun activities are essential and largely part of their college experience. During the National Association for Campus Activities conference, I was inspired to have an outdoor musical performance on the college campus. I was aware that the President of Orange County Community College has prohibited live performances on the campus field, so, I decided to employ my communication skills. I put together a formal presentation, and made sure to include my plans to ensure the safety of all students during the event. In addition, I explained that the performers have been approved by the National Association for Campus Activities, thus, they are completely appropriate for college students. The President of the college was pleased with my ideas, and approved the performance. In addition to my efforts to better the college experience for students, I have been working to establish the college newspaper because I feel that a newspaper is vital in every school. However, in the past, the college newspaper failed because students lack the time and commitment required to maintain the former newspaper (The Word). Therefore, my innovative idea for a new web-based foundation offered a more quick and efficient way to relay news to the members of the faculty and students without consuming much of a student’s time. Currently, I am working with the website designer of Orange County Community College to create an attachment to the College’s current website. Soon, I will be able to post an article about the first outdoor musical performance on the college newspaper’s web attachment. By and large, all my efforts are for the students, for it is the students who make up an institution. Like all great things that exist, it first starts with an idea, and actions are one’s efforts. In my particular situation, I work hard because I want to better my college. My efforts become a service to the students. Generally, the small ideas, actions, and services I provide are what make a better college experience for me, but more importantly, the rest of the student body.
