HELP! Is it true that a pregnancy test eventually turns positive?

Okay, I have a five and a half month old, and really haven't been planning to get pregnant until another year from now. I got my period about 6 weeks after my baby was born, and have been ovulating ever since. Fertility runs high in my family! My husband and I have been super careful with condoms. I don't like the idea of breastfeeding and taking the pill, I know that the current research says it's fine, but I don't trust it.

My period is a day or two late, and I was just being a little paranoid this morning, so I took a pregnancy test left over from my first pregnancy. My period often is a few days late. My baby started calling to be fed, so I only waited about 35 seconds, and then tossed the stick out.

I came back to it tonight, which I know you are not supposed to do, and there was a faint second line.

I need reassurance - have any of you checked your pregnancy test 12 hours later, saw a second line, and were definitely not pregnant?

I will be thrilled to have another baby, it's just not part of our plan right now - which will obviously change!
I have heard that they do, but I need to hear people's personal stories to reassure me!
