Help! Iphone Question?

Hello World, I was given an Iphone 2g and was wondering what it takes to get it up and running? when you turn it on it sayd insert Sim Card. I have a phone through AT&T so should I just remove the sim card and stick it in the Iphone. I looked into buying one a while ago but the workers said I had to pay $40 monthly to use the internet services, I asked if it could be run without it and they said no. Can I use the phone w/o the internet? How do I get internet w/o paying $40 a month. Thankyou
