Normally, they used ot keep information about the house and land in an abstract.
The one on my 1883 farm house shows it was a 160 acre homestead and lists all the owners, improvements and such for the land up until the date I bought the house.

any help would be greatful
If you look on the deeds to your house you will see all the people who have lived there and the name of the builder who built the house. Other then that you can pop into the local Council offices they have records of the houses and be able to advise you. I am not sure about any web sites so cannot advise on them, not unless you find one for the local Council and email them to ask about the house.

Depends where you are - first place to look is for OS Maps in the UK which will show when it first appeared (you may need to pay to see detailed maps). The best place is to visit your local archive - make an appointment on line and they should be able to help you. You could also use the British History on-line which has digitized versions oif the Victoria Counties Histories as well as other works like the Survey of London. If its sufficiently important it may have been researched in the Buildings of England Series (aka Pevsner) again in the library.
