This is really embarrassing but I would rather ask a stranger than my friends to read this.
I'm about the lose my financial aid for the incoming school year (I start at the end of September.) I may be able to get it back by writing a letter of appeal stating why I have not been academically successful this year.

Can you please help me make any corrections to the following paragraph?
and Is the paragraph comprehensible? or do I need to further explain my situation in more depth?

I have always been a good student. When I got into college my GPA was a 3.89. My first quarter went great. I got a 3.4 GPA. During winter quarter of my freshman year, my father was diagnosed with cancer. This was devastating to me and my family. I fell into a downward spiral; I was such an emotional wreck and I could barely function. I felt so depressed; I was tired all the time, I had no energy or motivation to go to class, I was always sleepy and the only reason I ate was because my friends forced me to. Because I was a pre-psychology major, I did not seek any type of counseling thinking that it would somehow hinder my career opportunities once I graduated. That quarter my GPA fell to a 1.5 and I fell behind on my units. My father had surgery to remove the cancer and everything seemed to be going better. By the time spring quarter ended, I had raised my GPA to a 2.9, however, I was still behind on units because of winter quarter and I was placed on financial aid probation. I attended summer school and gained more units than what I was originally missing.
