Help Identifying an Anthology Cartoon Segment

There's an old cartoon I'm trying to place. I know it aired on Nick Jr. around the mid 90's, and I think it may have been on Papa Beaver's Storytime, but I can;t be sure, as the network aired a lot of fables and stories in that time slot besides Papa Beaver.

Anyway, the segment I'm thinking of is basicallyabout this man who was granted a magic ball with a string, and pulling on said string would push the man forward through time by a little bit, to avoid the troublsome and bad bits of life. Sort of like a fast forward button. At first, he uses it when something of major incident happens, like breaking a leg.
Eventually, as his life progesses, he gets or and more flippant with the magic ball; instead of using it for genuinely distressing things, he uses it for anything and everything that makes him unhappy, from major upsets to mild annoyances.
I recall at one point he was irritated because his newborn son would'nt stop crying and his older children were very loud while he tried to work, he resorted to yanking the string, only in his frustration he yanks too hard and he is moved too far forward in time.
In fact, he's moved so far forward he discovers his wife is dead,
and because he used the string every single time something bad happened, to avoid all the terrible things in life, he discoveres he has practically no memories of his dead wife, nor his own life.

It's one of the best cartoon segemnts I've ever seen, but because I only saw it once and so long ago, I have no idea where it's really from or what the episode's called.
If anyone's got any idea what episode this is or what show it's from, or better yet, what short story it's based on (I'm positive it must be based on a short story) then please help me out.

I swear, no wonder Nick Jr. fairy tales always messed with my head as a kid.

I always thought it was just because I was young, but this is some deep twisted stuff that kept me awake at night.

I remember that PBS' "Adventure from the Book of Virtures" did that story. I think Rob Paulsen did the voice of the main character in that segment.

Now that I think on it, you may be right. Thinking back, I think the animation style was a bit like "Virtues". That ought to make tracking down the episode (to at least find out what it's based on) a little bit easier, at least.
I hope.
