I am absolutely, positively terrified by the idea let alone actually getting on an airplane. However, I am going to have to fly to the East Coast next month. I have no clue what to expect or how being that high up in the air will affect my body. Maybe that is a silly thought but I just don't know what to expect. And lucky me I will be flying with my husband who is just as nervous as I am being his first time too! Any tips? I have read on other websites that you can talk to your doctor about it and they could prescribe you xanax for the flight to help ease anxiety. Has anyone else taken one for that reason? How was your experience? Any first time flyer tips? All input is greatly appreciated!!!! Thanks!!

Hi there! I do know some people who take a relaxing medication before flights and they say it helps greatly!! I am not sure what they took, but I know it was not Xanax or a specific anxiety medication, but something exactly for relaxing in the short term time frame. Definitely talk to your doctor about that. I know they even make things like this for pets while traveling, and I've also used benadryl for relaxing myself a little bit when having trouble sleeping. Using something to calm you may be a great idea for the first flight. You might even not need it on the way back! I think the hardest part is just not knowing what to expect. The people I know who didn't go on a plane until an adult said it wasn't as bad as they thought. I don't know anyone who said it was worse than they expected, so that's a good thing :). Some of them said they thought the plane seemed smaller than they expected (on the inside). Perhaps this is because some movies show a plane very roomy inside (I wish!). It's usually more on the snug side if you sit in Coach.

My fiance had never been on a plane until recently. I'd been on planes many times since I was a kid, so I kind of explained to him what to expect. Be sure to take some gum with you, because most likely your ears will feel stopped up once the plane gets high enough in the ear. The change of pressure can make your ears stuffy or make them pop. If you chew gum, swallow often, and yawn when you can, your ears will stay clear! It's somewhat similar to how it feels being under deeper water when you feel pressure in your ears. It's a pretty simple ride when the plane drives around before take-off. When the plane is getting ready to leave the ground, it speeRAB up and it can sometimes feel a little bumpy. As it goes up into the air, you feel the change in air pressure. Once you are up in the air and the plane is staying level (and the captain/attendants will let you know it's safe to move around or use electronics), you probably won't feel much at all. In fact, it's pretty boring! You might feel a little turbulance if there are a lot of clouRAB out, but if the sky is very clear, you won't feel much. Some turbulence is completely normal and nothing to worry about, and at this time they usually turn back on the seatbelt signs. As you land, the plane does go very fast on the ground and has to slow down pretty fast. Sometimes this can be a little rough depending on how the captain flies/drives. Then the plane just slows down and drives to the airport!

How long is your flight? Definitely take something to keep yourself busy. I always take my iPod, a book, and maybe some magazines. I usually can't sleep on the plane very well, but sometimes I try. The only part I hate about flying is that occasionally I have to sit next to an annoying person. One time a very drunk person sat next to me and kept talking while I was trying to read. Another time somebody smelled pretty bad, fell asleep, and kept snoring very loudly. I also try to avoid using the restrooms since they are so tiny!

Just remeraber that planes are safer than driving! An accident while driving is much more common than something happening on a plane.

Hi there! I have a couple of ideas for you! First of all there's this technique called "Emotional Freedom Techniques" which can be super helpful! Just do a search for it and there's free info on how to do the technique. It's the equivalent to an emotional acupuncture but without the needles. You basically tap on different acupuncture points on the body to stop the overwhelming feelings. I've done it for quite a bit of things. It actually helped me when having a reaction to milk after eating something with it in it (I have food allergies). I've read too quite a lot of success stories for people with flying phobias and how much it has helped with that.

Also, there's this great stuff called "Rescue Remedy" which is a homeopathic solution for stress. I think you can get it at most health food stores. You put a couple of drops under your tongue and I think it works really well. So maybe you might want to go the natural route and it's nice to not need a prescription for this stuff!

I take a low dose Xanax before I fly. It works very well. I tried Rescue Remedy before and it did nothing for me. Good luck and enjoy your trip.

tUrRrA, CareBerry, and Sunshine thank you all so much for replying!;)

I have received really good advice. My best friend (who has a pretty morbid sense of humor) told me that instead of taking a xanax, I might as well snort a line of coke Hahaha! She was given Xanax while she got her tubes tied and said it was so strong that she couldn't even walk afterwarRAB. Yikes! Definitely not what I had in mind. Anti-anxiety meRAB may be more than what I am looking for. So yeah, I don't think that I will be asking my doctor for anything to help with the flight. My husband and I will have to start flying a lot for business (Lord willing)so it would be best if I faced my fears head on or else I will be needing "something" every time I step foot on a plane.

The flight is only two hours (non stop). Not bad compared to the times I saw for flights that had stops. Some were 8 hours long! I have no clue as to why someone would choose an eight hour flight over a two hour flight.
Yeah, and the seats were another thing. It would be nice to fly first/business class but it's not the wisest choice for us financially. So I pray that whoever will be sitting in our row will be courteous, sober.....and quiet :D lol

I will have to google Emotional Freedom Techniques and read up on it. I am familiar with homeopathic remedies. I have kava kava teas. I also take Valerian Root and Passion Flower but have similar experiences to Sunshines. One day it works, the next it doesn't.

Thanks Turrrra for going in-depth!!

:dizzy:I am sure there is nothing to worry about, it's just fear trying to get the best of me. I am certain the flight won't be anywhere close to what I thought it was! I'll look back and laugh at how much I over reacted, I'm sure of it. Thanks guys!!
