Help! How do you verify your username/password on an htc inspire phone?

I'm trying to add an email account on my phone (HTC Droid Inspire), but when I enter my username and password it says, "Authentication failed. Please verify your username/password." How do I verify them. It is already an existing account; I just want to add it to my phone. Please help.
