help,help, my garden is being eaten alive with slugs. I have a young child

and wont use chemicals!? We have tried the beer thing and yes it works, but the slugs have a bigger drink problem than me. I have a small child and could not even consider anything chemical. Is there any natural, harmless to human solutions out there?
