I have left 3 months untreated for GERD. My doctor recently diagnosed me with GERD because the stomach acid went all the way up to my nose which was burning and painful including my throat. I took omeprazole (prilosec) 20 mg twice a day for 3 days and had a side effect tingling feeling so I stopped using it. I switched to Protonix 40mg once a day, this is my 2nd day on it and no side effect so far. I heard you need to be PPI for 8 weeks (2 months) to see improvements. My doctor put a camera inside me and saw (red bumps on my throat) due to acid burning and told me taking PPI medication will help my throat heal and erosive esophagus. I had the acid reflux at night during bed time lying down and my stomach was bloated it was horrible and scary. I am scared of stomach ulcer. Do you think i should have a endoscopy and see a gastroenterologist to check further inside my stomach, because so far my ENT doctor saw red bumps on my throat with the fiberoscope? Or should I wait a month while I am on PPI (Protonix) to see if my throat improves or not before I go see a gastroenterologist? I need to change my diet because I ate unhealthy before and mostly spicy, acidic, junk fooRAB, coffee. My throat is itchy now probably because of the red bumps, but before it was burning so bad. I always have a feeling of lumps in my throat whenever I swallow empty. Please help. Thanks, and yes everything I described is real. Anyone who has red bumps in throat due to stomach acid burning please tell me how to soothe it or how you healed it? Any information will be great. My doctor told me GERD is chronic and I was thinking of seeing a nutritionist for GERD so I can eat healthy. Doctor told me stress can also cause more acid too since I am in school.

did the ENT give you a report? those red bumps should have a specific name, you should go to a GI doctor, i hope you respond to the ppi's cause a lot of people (myself included) don't, i don't think a nutricionist will help much you can just follow a GERD diet which you can find on thousand sites online so it's a waste of money imo, you mention "erosive esophagus" have you had an upper endoscopy before? cause for what i know that's the only way to know if you have erosive esophagitis, good luck with everything take care

If you have bad reflux, it is always good to have an EGD to get a baseline of how your esophagus and stomach is doing. I will say that I have extremely severe reflux and so far 3 EGD's have come back normal. I believe the PPI's have helped keep me from having more damage.

As for when to seek out a GI doc, it really depenRAB on how severe your reflux is and how much confidence you have in your ENT. I see a GI doc, ENT and Pulmonologist to coordinate my reflux treatment. (My reflux/LPR affects my throat and lungs.)

I would ask your ENT what else you can be doing to help calm your throat in addition to the PPI's. My ENT gave me several other strategies to help with irritation as well.

Typically with true LPR, most people need PPI's twice a day for an extended period of time. The 2 months recommendation is the time it takes to help heal your esophagus from irritation. The throat is much more sensitive to acid, thus the longer perioRAB of time on PPI's.

I've been on the PPI's for about 9 years now and anticipate remaining on them indefinitely.

You already had the endoscopy getting another one isnt going to change anything here. I suggest though after few years you can go back for another one I get one every few years to see how the condition is doing. Usual GERD is a life long condition and so you take your PPI and watch your diet for well most your life, and you get your endoscopy here and there to see how its progressing the thing you don't want to happen is Barretts esophagus, ulcers, esophagus cancers etc.. and other diseases like this for having GERD. But it can with GERD so thats why every few years you get an endoscopy to see if anything progressed if it has the endoscopy will tell the doctor, but yes you have GERD so you can't control that now but to eat right and take your PPI which is not a miracle drug but it helps the acid some what, so just relax the best you can and try to cope with your new condition it's probably gonna be there a long time, as most will tell you years and years. I'm on year 4 and prob 40 more years hah.. Best Wishes!

My family doctor wants to treat me for 2 months to see if my symptoms would reduce, before sending me to see a GI doctor. I will be on PPI and liquid antacid for a while now.

The camera you had in your throat... was it an endoscopy or just a throat scope?

I had a fibrescope down my throat by my ENT doctor. Doctor said i had red bumps all over my throat and that my vocal corRAB are red inflamed. Can anybody help?

I am taking PPIs Protonix 40 mg try for 5 days, now switching to Prevacid 30 mg every morning to see if my symptoms reduce. I was also prescribed taking Mylanta antacid, but I am taking that for night time, it seems to soothe my burning throat a little. What else is there to take to help me reduce my symptoms and increase healing in my throat and nose and esophagus?
