In a matchbox is a cricket with a patent leather shine.
It's at Peter's and he's printed "Mr. Cricket" on a sign.
In a fruit jar that is open with a leaf on which to dine
is a cricket that is Cathy's and she thinks it's very fine.
Nothing's gayer than a cricket nothing's louder after nine.
But my mother thinks a thicket is the nicest place for mine.

I memorized this poem waaay back in the first grade. I remember it distinctly because my teacher, Mrs Seagrave, said we were going to have to recite it in front of the class, and I was terrified that I'd look like a fool if I didn't know it. My Mom went in her bedroom with me and helped me for about an hour and a half to memorize it, until I knew it by heart. Little did I know that we were reciting it in groups, and I was THE ONLY ONE who knew the entire thing word for word!!

I forgot all about this poem for years, until one day it suddenly started creeping back into my head. Now, every once in awhile, I'll recite it to myself, to make sure my memory is still intact. Concerning the cricket, it most certainly is.
