I have been trying to find a cheap bicycle for a long time, but I notice that the idea of cheap is more like $200 which is not my idea of cheap. I have seen some on eBay that are $60-$100 which look decent but have a local pickup only policy. I definitely don't want the cheap Walmart crap and already know better.
I really like the imported bicycles such as Peugeot. I however know pretty much nothing about bicycles so are there other foreign brands I could purchase? I like the look a lot of the Peugeot bikes have. I like the look a lot of the classic European bikes have but I'm certainly not limiting myself to vintage (I just like the idea of riding an imported bike be it from Japan, Europe, or anywhere but the US - just seems interesting and unique). This will be my first serious riding bicycle (had one as a child that was just a ride around and learn how to ride but was only a fixed gear). I plan to ride on roads and pavement, although it isn't all going to be smooth like a road and may be on sidewalk. I believe the most I'd want to go towards a mountain bike would be a hybrid but I certainly prefer a more road intended bicycle.
Now another question I had about folding bicycles - these seem really finnicky to me. Are they safe to ride? I would be afraid to ride one for fear it would collapse on me while I'm riding it or something else. I have considered a folding bicycle for the ease of which I could put it in my trunk when travelling to the university I attend as opposed to riding the bus once I arrived.
Obviously I don't mind buying a used bicycle so I will consider any used bike. I believe I determined I need a frame that's 52-56 CM (I'm 5'5"ish) if that helps in any recommendations. I appreciate any advice, but I'm on a tight budget and do not already own a helmet which would be an additional cost added on from the bike purchase in the first place so would appreciate all advice with this in mind.
I have a car, transportation isn't a problem. I just get sick of waiting on the shuttle and relying on it to get me from my car to the campus. I have experienced similar objection in audio equipment where I've been told I must spend more money yet I've spent relatively little and have a very nice setup. I just don't believe it's so impossible to find a decent bike for that kind of money.
I suppose I could also check Goodwill and other flea markets, but that I really do expect little of. Not that someone doesn't ever give away something that is good (My friend found $1500 worth of audio equipment at Goodwill once).
