Help buying a stereo set?

so i want a sound system .not too expensive . i want to hook it up to my sharp hdtv (bout 42 inch). i want to be able to hook it up to my laptop or mp3 . and it needs to work while on input (dvd, xbox ...) and while its on tv . needs to be surround sound . don't know the exact terms . can anybody give me link explaining these things . and which theater system do you think is the best for me
