Help buying a mountain bike?

I am looking to buy a decent mountain bike, that will be fine to go off road with. It seems like every one that has good reviews, has an equal amount of bad reviews. I would like to spend less than 300$, but maybe up to 500$ if it is something that would last. Any help would be appreciated... Thanks...
 
have you ever seen the beginning of the movie "taxi"? that bicycle is what i've got and it is amazing on and off the road. i ride it very abusively but this thing won't stop carry me on wherever i go. check it out. but seriously with your price range, i can't look for anything special other than the Trek 4 series, that's about all that i can recommend to you. my additional suggestion would be that if you are going to be a consistent mountain bike rider, it is more than okay to empty out your pocket for your baby because it is more than worth it my friend. bike companies do not lie, they will back up their price tags with qualities of their bicycles.
