Caramel Crumb

Ok, so my hair is naturally black and a few months ago I got caramel-coloured highlights. Now I want to get rid of it and I am thinking of buying black dye. But the think is, if I dye black over my highlights, would that 'black' fade and then the caramel colour will show again? I really don't know or what to do!? Please help me
