I Want To Know

I'm a 3rd year undergraduate currently on medical leave. I've been on medical leave since January 2010 and have recently discussed with my University when I will be back (I'm aiming for 2012).
However, I have also toyed with quitting the course and the university and starting afresh with something completely different. On reflection I'm not sure if that would be the best option, I only have 1 year of my degree left so may as well finish it before doing something else.
Now my problem arises with the fact that I haven't the capacity to study full time right now (hence the move to go back in 2012 and not 2011) as I think I could relapse (I've had several in the past so don't want to push myself too much by going back to uni too soon) and another issue is the fact that I've been out of full time education for a while now and have serious concerns about being able to cope with it again (I don't want to jump in and find I can't cope with a full time workload, I'll end up failing).
My solution to this is to study a part time course (such as a few extra GCSEs like maths or science as I don't have them or an Access Course in health etc which is really what I want to do as it'll give me more options later on) so that I can ease myself back into study. Am I allowed to do this? Would any problems arise out of the fact that I'm in university (ie would the college mind)? Would university mind or kick up any kind of fuss? Will it affect anything like my university funding (even if I plan on paying for the extra courses myself)?
Thank you for all help and understanding in this matter. It's muchly appreciated!
