Help about Copy Right Laws?

I have a friend who is making a CD and he's using his own lyrics but is using other song beats, Can he copyright his lyrics and just call the CD a Mix Tape, So hes not braking any copyrights? Or Does he have to call all these people, or what does he do. Help if you hvae anyclue about copyrights and all that good stuff. Thankz<3
