Helmet law

I think there is a mandatory helmet law in NJ, but a few years ago they changed it for, like, one day, then changed it back. I always wear one but if people don't want to it's OK by me.

It's still strange to see people in Pa without one. Kind of like "What's missing in this picture?" I go over to New Hope once in a while on Sundays to look at all the bikes lined up on the street. Mainly Harley's, but there's usualy a great assortment of other brands in there, too. If you go, stop at the Triumph Brewery there.

Hmm, I think it's pretty hard to argue that, although I'd love to see the statistics.

I got the feeling that most like over 99% of people that crash without wearing a helmet and have major head injuries most likely die, kinda ties it up pretty neatly imo. One could argue that people that crash and sustain head injuries with helmets have a higher chance of needing long term care for broken necks and spinal cord injuries that are a result of that.

Beat me to it!

Gnance's argument would hold ground if and only if helmets would save lives and prevent you from "vegetable" state 100% of times. Given that this is not true (same goes for seat belts), I still think it should be up to an individual to determine his/her fate (minus the idiot drivers on the road).

Think of wearing a helmet as using a condom: 99% safe

i see people on here saying that they go 150 180 mph and so on -no one ever says anything about that being stupid -but the same ones think it is awful not to wear a helmet -how about just minding your own business and enjoy our bikes what ever way you want to -after all isnt the point of riding to have fun and enjoy living ? there is no safety guarantee with a motorcycle

Really?

Define "controlled environment."

Now define "doing 180mph and falling off the bike... in a controlled environment."

I hope you get the point.

I can't imagine not wearing a helmet anyway. All the bugs and shit that flies into my helmet I would not want in my mouth/eyes/nose.

I would think if anyone were to crash without a helmet and get rash or broken jaw, etc they would think differently the next time.

I agree do what you want, the whole harley thing kinda gets under my skin though cause up here they are a dime a dozen and it is all about image and the cool factor. yet, they will have their passengers all geared up. I don't get it.

No helmet law may seem oppressive or whatever, but for a lot of people this law isn't just about the rider. Think about your family and friends and perhaps taxpayers. More people are affected by you dying than you might realize. With that being said though, weeding out the idiots is nature's way.

Ok, I live in Ontario Canada and we've got mandatory helmet laws. I do think it should be your own choice just because I hate anything that costs personal freedom. Of course wearing a helmet is safer but the helmetless accidents usually result in fatalities which are much cheaper than long term care anyway. As for protecting the public getting people off of ALL motorcycles is the safest solution of all, and there's a lot of politicians pushing for just that. Look at some of the sport bike laws coming into Quebec and things being proposed there.

I just don't find it comfortable to ride without one. Two weeks ago my visor broke off my helmet passing a transport (that's another story) and there were no bike shops open for the next two days within a couple hundred km. I just put on sunglasses and rode anyway for the weekend. It sucked! I lost two contact lenses at different times and the wind blast was annoying as hell.
