Hi Kezzo,
I had my second fusion in Sept 2006. I was fully fused at 6 months post op. I continue to have problems, but pain-free was never the goal, not even on the radar. My doctor and I knew I would still have problems. I have a very unusual spine. He's very experienced and has never seen another spine like mine. I have to say that I really am thrilled at the result of my surgery, even though I still hurt all the time. It was a good decision!

I walked inside, due to some low blood pressure issues that made me have to use a walker for 6 weeks after surgery. I was prone to passing out, so for my own safety, they made me use it. I walked back and forth in my bedroom or up and down the hallway. It got boring, but I'd put in a movie to keep my mind off my pain and my boredom. I didn't let myself stop until I got truly tired or started hurting more. I was determined to do everything within my own power to help that fusion get going!

Let us know if you have other questions. We're just full of advice (mostly good! ;)) and love to help others as we're able. And please let us know how you're doing!

Take care,
Emily

hi everyone,i am new to this site but i have read many of your postings and advice,i had a luraber fusion 4 weeks ago,i was just wondering if any of you know how long i should be walking for by now,i do about 20 minutes a day and wondered if this was long enough,i dont have any pain at all and i stopped taking tablets 2 weeks ago,i am sore but not in pain, but it feels like i have a sheet of metal under my skin, which i know i havent it just feels like that, does anyone know if its my skin knitting back together and did anyone else feel like that,my thighs are also sore when i lie on them, does anyone know why.i go back to the hospital in 3 weeks but i hoped someone might answer my questions before then please.
thank you
kezzo:):)

When I was at your point, I was walking about 20 minutes or so at a time, but I did that several times a day. If you're not having pain, is there a reason you only walk 20 minutes a day? Are you too tired? The more you can walk, the better your chances of having a strong fusion. Walking gets the blood circulating through the spine, which is essential for bone growth. If 20 minutes is all you're able to do, that's fine, but if you're able to do more, that would be better.

I wish you the best,
Emily

thanks for the reply,i really appreciate it,hope you are all doing well,to be honest i expected to be in alot more pain than i am but i am only taking things slowly because i dont want to hurt myself, and i really want this to work cos i dont want the pain back that i had before and i want my life back;);)
take care all

Most doctors recommend that you walk, walk, walk. It sounRAB like you are doing great. Minor aches and pains are to be expected as this time. I would say it sounRAB like you are ahead of the game.

hi emily, sorry to hear that you are still in pain, you have certaintly been through the mill, lucky for me i only needed one fusion right at the bottom of the spine so hopefully it will work, but i know what you mean about the boredom it could drive you insane!you want to do things then remeraber that you cant ,do you know why my thighs are sore when i lay down they are ok when i am standing or sitting.
thanks

Hi Kezzo. Can you be more specific when you say your thighs are "sore" when you lye down. Is this like a muscle type sore, or skin sore, or nerve pain type sore? Where on your thighs? Front, sides, back, all over?

Are you walking gingerly out of fear, rather than trying to walk more normally? Are you walking in a crouched position at all?

hi justoneofus,my thighs get sore on the out sides of my legs at the top when i lay on them, its like they go nurab and i have to turn over onto my other side but then after so long the same thing happens on that thigh, so i seen to toss and turn all night in bed,no im not walking gingerly i walk normal and with good posture,i also wear a hard body brace which i will wear for another 4 weeks, any suggestions would be gratefully received:)
thanks
kezzo
