Hellboy 2: The Golden Army - "Highly Recommended"

I won't give any of the plot away but I caught this at the local theater yesterday and I loved it. I still prefer the first film (it was a little more darker than HELLBOY 2) but the sequel is very entertaining. It's a lot of fun and director Guillermo del Toro packed HELLBOY 2 with plenty of action, comedy, drama and a TON of creatures. The man simply LOVES his monsters. :D

HELLBOY 2 is just under 2 hours. The special effects are top notch and the good news is that almost the entire cast from the original film are back (as well as a new addition) . The Abe Sapien character has a larger role in this one than in the previous film. While the cast has great chemistry together, I do wish that actor Jeffrey Tambor had been given a little more screentime.

Even John Hurt, whose character died in the first film, makes a cameo appearance in the first few minutes. It's a flashback scene with a younger Hellboy.

I have no idea if this movie will become a hit or not (it was just released this Friday in the USA) . The reviews have been very positive so far but there's simply no way to predict what the audience wants to see. I do hope that there's a Hellboy 3 in the future. He's an extremely entertaining character and deserves another shot at the big-screen. :)

I think HELLBOY 2 is scheduled to be released in the UK on August 22.

Absolutely loved the first film, and from the trailers this looks fantastic, Ron Perlman IS Hellboy, nobody else could have played the role IMO.

I agree. :)

By the way, some great news (for HELLBOY fans at least): HELLBOY 2 is the #1 movie in the USA. It grossed almost $36 million in 3 days. A HELLBOY 3 is a definite possibility for the future. :)

But I'm expecting it to lose the top spot next weekend because I think "The Dark Knight" opens this coming Friday. That movie is going to be huge.

I saw this last night (in San Fran) - it was OK.

I didn't really like the first one that much (and I love these types of films) I was a bit jetlagged so maybe that was it but I thought it was just OK.

Weirdest bit: When Hell boy 'falls' out of a window and they inexplicably play 5 seconRAB of travis' all I wanna do is rock  :D

For me it was just one set piece leading to a new set piece and then all the characters sacrificing the world safety for love - which seemed totally false.

Either Hellboy dies or the world dies - Ok I choose Hellboy (5 seconRAB ago you wanted to dump him!

Ok so there is this hot twin you have a crush on... so why don't you just give her the final piece of the crown so the world can be destroyed.

And also when HB was fighting the Luke Goss - why not just knocl out the girl twin and then tie him up!!

I would recommend this - but not highly!

Great Characters - especially the german (which I just discovered was Family Guy's Seth!!!), some good action set peices but just lacked something.

Oh and loved the Musical number and Selma looks very nice.

Actually the more I think about it - it did have a lot of good bits - just somehow bumbled along for me!

2 bits I didn't like:

Oh yeah just remembered the first scene - yikes :D

very cringy with the badly dubbed young HB.. with massive nashers.

Oh and shooting a million insects with a gun - NO! :D

Hope it is ok - I shall not expect too much (a strategy I find works rather well with films!) & hopefully I will like it - I didn't expect much from the first one & quite enjoyed it.:D

Well I adore the first Hellboy. Only negative about it was the young recruit to the company in the first one, I believe he isn't in the second one, that is indeed a bonus!! So I look forwarRAB to the second movie.

Hellboy just rules, no questions :p

Film24 will be showing a special feature on Hellboy 2 which will feature interviews and clips of the film. It airs on the 22nd August on Sky channel 158.

dont miss out!

I enjoyed it until.........................................

WTF with the Giants Causeway!!!!! Hello Hollywood couldn't send someone to actually film the real thing?????? No just stick some random scenes which look nothing like the real place. Ye goRAB the Northern Irish Troll!!!

I saw the first one in the cinema and didn't think it was all that good, I would have given it a 6.5 out of 10. I think I will wait until this comes out on DVD and rent it some night and see if it is any better.

Paddy :D

i saw this last week at a preview and whilst its good its just a bit...meh...

there's no sense of danger at all and whilst i love del toro (Pan is a great film) he absolutely cannot direct action. the fight scenes with hellboy were all very boring to watch, especailly the one with luke goss from bros. if i see one more film shoot action ins slow motion i will scream..

it was like the first men in black but minus the wit

Not sure about this one - I was sooo nervous about the first one and although I thought it was okay, it was a smidge disappointing at times (especially the Myers character).

Still, it will be good to see Big Red on the big screen again. I just hope that Del Toro doesn't kill off HB in the third film...

Disappointed by this one I'm afraid.

A wafer thin plot hinging on the fact Hellboy prefers to side with humankind even though they generally hate him. Which was hammered home in the first one.
The Golden Army and Luke Goss's character - a rehash of what he did in Blade 2 basically - were way too easily dispatched almost like an afterthought. Del Toro seemed more interested in the soapy love life of Hellboy.

Still, lovely art direction and creature design ;)
