Consider the following heat engine cycle describing a cylinder with piston undergoing a series of processes. The working gas in the cylinder is nitrogen. At the start of the cycle, the volume is 2 litres, the pressure 1 atm and the gas is at 600K. Heat is removed and the piston is moved so that the gas undergoes isobaric compression to a volume of 1 litre. (a) What is the change in internal energy of the gas during this process? How much heat is removed? (b) With the piston stationary, heat is then added to the cylinder until the temperature is again 600K. What is the change in internal energy? (c) The piston is now allowed to move so that the gas undergoes isothermal expansion to a volume of 2 litres, completing the cycle. Sketch a PV-diagram. (d) What is the net work?
