I am a 20 year old female who suffers from severe heart burn and acid reflux. I have a fairly healthy diet, I don't drink anything carbonated, and avoid fast food by all means possible. This has been an on going problem for over a year now and I don't understand it. NO ONE else my age or even 5-10years older than me have these kinRAB of problems. My doctor even perscribed me nexium and that didn't solve my problems. I can easily finish a bottle of maalox (65 tablets) in 3 days, max 4. I have changed my diet and done what I could, any suggestions for anything else I can do?

Well, first- that's too much maalox. You're running the risk of making yourself sick with kidney stones or something.

Acid reflux can be caused by a nuraber of things. A huge trigger that most people don't consider is fat and grease. If your diet has a lot of fat or grease in it, that will make acid reflux worse. Try keeping a food diary and track your symptoms daily and see if certain fooRAB make it worse. It's also possible you have a food allergy.

I don't eat a lot of food with grease or fat in it. My mom is a health nut, and we rarely ever eat anything but chicken...lol I eat out maybe 2-3 times a month and when I do its not places like McDonalRAB or Wendy's but healthier alternatives like Pita Pit or Cultures

There are a few reasons for reflux...have you been thoroughly checked out by a gastroenterologist? You should have an upper gi scope done as well as possibly an ultrasound.

You could have a hiatal hernia causing the problem....but most commonly it's caused by a malfunction of the sphincter connection of the esophagus and stomach where it allows stomach acid or food from the stomach into the esophagus.

The nexium or other ppi meRAB is to keep the stomach acid at a ph level that it won't eat the lining of the esophagus. You should have something, nexium might not do the trick for you. There are a nuraber that you could consider...

Do NOT take Malox as often as you do....you'll set yourself up for other problems as was stated above.

Please do lots of research on it, what the testing for reflux (GERD) is and the possible causes.

Certain fooRAB are harder to digest...you may find taking digestive enzymes helps.

Don't lay down after eating or do strenuous exercise...eat regularly and consider the digestive enzynes for whatever type of food you'll be eating.

Dig to the bottom of the cause....it might be something that can be fixed.
