I have mixed feelings about this article. I agree with some opinions and diagree with others.
This article is very informative about issues pertaining to the abuse of human rights in other parts of the world, whether that was in the past or in the present.
The author asks a question: why are we focusing on Tibet when there are so many other issues demanding attention? I've noticed this quesiton comes up quite often.
To me the fact that there are other abuses around world is NOT an excuse to ignore Tibetan issue. If there is an opportunity to do something in any case, whether it's about Tibet or not, it should be taken. It so happens that the Olympics this year illuminate human rights issues in China - logically because of what Olympics symbolize and where they are taking place. The current events could have been easily predicted. '
Furthermore, as you can see by the example of this article, the issue of Tibet also attracts attention to the human right abuses in other parts of the world - therefore the Tibetan issue is not just about Tibet.
The author also asks a question why are people silent regarding other issues? Are they? I don't think so. I often read about voiced concerns about other issues around the world, as well.
The author focuses on the potentially damaging consequences of protests. An interesting approach, but I'm not sure if I would agree with all of his conclusions. If there is not enough communication and understanding between parties involved, then protests in my opinion could be useful in making relevant issues more clear to both sides. As long as protests are not violent, then I think everyone has the right to voice their views. We don't have to agree with them, or take them personally.
I agree that China has progressed immensely in many domains. It would be nice to see significant achievements in terms of cultivation and promotion of human rights as well though. Certainly, there is a room to grow, even if perfection is unobtainable.
There are many other issues that are debatable, but I don't wish for this answer to be even more lengthy than it already is.
