News report I watched said that Commonwealth visits were being planned for Prince William, especially. And, why not....he's more interesting and popular than Charles & Camilla...who seem like two old fogies to a lot of people.
While I certainly don't think that there are plans for Charles NOT to be king...I do think that it can't hurt the Royal Family to have the two boys out representing the Queen.
Edward doesn't want to do it...and poor Andrew is far from the brightest match in the box, although seems to be doing an OK job as far as the nitty-gritty of peddling UK goods all over the world...
The Princess Royal likes to stay close to her home farm & her plate is already pretty full with the charity work, so it makes a lot of sense to have the two boys taking on a more public duty roster for the "Firm".
Thankfully, Prince William is a little smarter than his mother was. He will doubtless be the focus of a lot of media attention (which is what the Royal Family wants), but will handle it more wisely than did his mother and won't make a lot of the mistakes she made.
It is a shame that the Canadian trip was not better planned to give Charles & Camilla more opportunities to be able to "shine". Both of them are such nice people...and Charles, especially, has done such a good job with charity work...and people didn't get to see much of that side of them due to the mistakes in the kinds of events/activities that were planned for their Canadian trip.
Charles did a good job raising the two boys and helping them through the catastrophes of their youth. Prince William, especially, will reflect well on the Royal Family. They need to get him on out there to bolster "ratings".

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester also represented The Queen at the funeral of the late King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV of Tonga in September 2006. The Duke and Duchess went back in 2008.

They also expensed £114,000 for a charter jet to fly them 4400 miles from Auckland, NZ to Tonga, the to the Solomon islands, and then to Brisbane Australia. The whole trip took 11 or 12 days. It's the king of trip that Prince Charles would never do, let alone The Queen (she toured all of her realms via yacht as a young queen).

I should imagine these duties will mainly involve cleaning up after the corgis. Her Majesty is far too old to have to attend to their merest whimper. She may love those wonderful dogs but there comes a time for all of us when we have to take stock of the situation and relinquish some of the dog work to others.
I did advise many years ago that they be house trained but one was overruled by none other than Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.

It would be that kind of thing exactly - William is already planned to visit Australia and New Zealand next year for that reason. Harry wasn't mentioned in that announcement. As head of state, there are some things (not many) that the Queen cannot delegate, but the royal family get so many invitations of the ribbon cutting, speech giving kind that one person cannot possibly do them all. Other members of the family already do a lot of this. One more "official" duty that is frequently delegated is representing the Queen at funerals - traditionally women didn't attend them and the Queen often doesn't. The chances are that William is almost certain to be king one day so it only makes sense to get him some "on the job training"!
