I spent my entire life completely acne free. Everywhere I went, strangers would comment on how beautiful my skin was. I'm not exaggerating at all. I felt very fortunate, and never took it for granted. I used Clean and Clear face wash and Aveeno moisturizer for years. Suddenly, about a year ago, I began to have horrible breakouts for no explicable reason. I had been on the same birth control for about a year (avian) and never had the issue.

In the past year, I stopped taking birth control, thinking maybe that was causing it. I drink "green smoothies" daily and had an 8 month bout as a vegetarian. I recently reintroduced chicken though (only the hormone-free kind), thinking maybe the vegetarianism was doing me no favors and I'm trying to see if this will make improvement. I stopped drinking coffee about two weeks ago as well. I used to drink one cup a day. I take multivitamins, 600 mg of fish oil a day, and B12. I restrict my consumption of milk and have done so for about two years now. I have noticed no difference in the acne when I switch from almond milk, to soy milk, or to rice milk. I don't seem to be allergic to any of these. I only eat 70 % dark chocolate when I do eat the stuff. I consume very little fried food and use only cold pressed olive oil when cooking. My fiance is allergic to gluten, so I rarely eat anything containing it either. In fact, we are both health nuts in terms of food and I mostly eat raw. I also exercise 5 days a week.

I tried the oil cleansing method for a month and a half. I wanted to give it a fair shot, but it did not improve my situation.

I tried Pro-Active but it was too harsh for my skin.

I have recently been using cetaphyl but it isn't changing the situation. I stopped using my former products (clean and clear and aveeno) because they didn't seem to be doing the job.

Someone else on this forum mentioned using Apple Cider Vinegar as a cleanser. Any thoughts?

I'm just so confused. Why, at age 22/23 suddenly go haywire? I eat healthier than anyone I know. I use mineral makeup and drink blended vegetables twice a day for God's sake! What do I have to do!? Sometimes i won't leave the house for weeks and thus, wear no makeup, so I can't see that as being the cause. Maybe I should get back on a different birth control. Thoughts? Also, has anyone heard of Splenda being inflammatory? Maybe that is a contributor.

The only thing that has changed in my life is that I moved from Indiana to Florida. (Also, I began getting some acne even at the tail end of my living in Indiana.) But I would think that after a year, my skin would have adjusted to the climate.

I've done endless research on health and how it relates to acne, but nothing I try seems to do any good. This is the first time I've posted on a forum like this. I guess I just thought this was a fleeting thing, and then suddenly I realized; It's been a whole year! What the heck.

Thanks for listening! Any advice welcome.

I totally understand how you feel and I went through something similar in my mid to late twenties (I'm now early thirties).
I never really had acne as a teen either, and always felt blessed.I think I would have preferred to have it then, instead!
Welcome to ADULT ACNE.It's not just for kiRAB anymore. But don't worry! There is much you can try and do!

Don't stress yourself over fooRAB.when I had acne bad,it didn't matter what I ate,I still broke out.
It's true some things may "aggravate" your acne like CAFFEINE is a big one,so cutting back on coffee is good.
Hormones in milk and meat may also contribute.
I switched to organic/hormone free milk and have had good results.
I would avoid soy milk.Only because soy is put into EVERYTHING we eat nowadays, and too much is bad for thyroid health.

I'm not familiar with Avian birth control, but some birth controls are more likely to cause acne then others. They contain certain "androgens".One of the worst is Triphasal 28.
Some doctors will prescribe Orthotricyclin, YAZ or YASMIN as a means of actually fighting acne,as they contain ANTI-androgens.
There is a medication called Spironolactone (aldactone) that blocks testosterone (the acne causing hormone!) that women can take also. Many find a corabination of this with birth control helps the most with their acne.
Hormones play a major part in adult acne, especially for women.

The thing with TOPICAL acne meRAB (over the counter and prescription) that most people don't realize,is they ALL cause a certain amount of redness, peeling or irritation~~AT FIRST.Your skin can adjust after a short time (two weeks, usually).

Also, most acne meRAB do make it worse before better! This is because they have to bring what is underneath the skin to the surface before it can clear!
There is nothing that works over night, and it makes me mad when companies claim they can because it really gets people's hopes up.It takes a minimum of at least 2 weeks, and often up to two months before noticing the full benefits of many meRAB.
So it's real important not to use something only a few days or a week and say it's not working.(not saying you do that, just trying to help.I use to do it when I didn't know better)

Cetaphil doesn't have any acne fighting ingredients,so I'm not surprised it isn't working.

Salicylic acid is good, and in EVERYTHING.It's kind of useless as a face wash, because it takes time to work and is rinsed off before it can do it's job.So any kind of acne fighting lotion or serum with it as an ingredient that you leave on probably works best.2% is a more effective strength to start with.Neutrogena has a make up with salicylic acid in it.

Benzoyl Peroxide is the oldest and one of the most effective solutions (although proactiv doesn't seem to work for a lot of people!)
You could try ANY 10% BP face wash that is Over-the-counter and probably have better results then with proactiv.
Proactiv did NOTHING for me.Now I'm just using OXY maximum, and it is really effective.

A corabination of salicylic acid and Benzoyl peroxide usually works better then just one by itself.Acne is a PROCESS,so if often responRAB better to several different kinRAB of treatment as opposed to just one.

After you've given over the counter products a good go,should you have no results,it may be time to seek out a dermatologist.
I waited so long before doing that, and in the end, I'm not sure why.I wasted so much money on crap that didn't work.
Just remeraber, not ALL dermatologist specialize in acne!
If you find one who doesn't take you or your acne serious, then he is not the right one.I went through 3 before finding mine that I LOVE,LOVE LOVE.And I don't have insurance so it was quite costly.
Once you see a dermatologist, there are SO MANY treatments available! Differin gel is a good, gentle one to start off with, but your derm will determine what is best for your skin.

a few final things:

If you are using mineral make-up,be sure you are washing your brushes regularly! Otherwise you are just putting bacteria straight to your face.
Some people can have a mild allergic reaction to mineral make up.(It made my skin itch like crazy!) So be sure that is not an issue.
My derm told me any make up that is water based is fine.Maybelline H20 is 90% water, and is pretty good.Or the acne fighting Neutrogena with salicylic acid is good too.

Be sure to wash sheets and pillow cases often or you are just laying your face on bacteria too.Don't use perfumey detergent or fabric softener.

Make sure you change your tootrabroadrush every 3 months. They can get filled with bacteria too after a while and then you are basically just putting bacteria in your mouth.
Avoid touching your face.Fingers have oil glanRAB and germs.
Good luck, you aren't alone! But you can control your acne until mother nature blesses you and lets you grow out of it

Thanks for your advice and sympathy! One thing I have a question on is how you wash your makeup brushes. I usually just buy new ones every six months or so. I know I need to do something in between. I'm just not sure what to use on them...just soap and water or rubbing alcohol? I am planning on making a gyno appointment and asking about Orthotricyclin or Yaz. My problem with Birth control has always been that ones high in estrogen make me nauseous etc; but I should probably be on one. I just don't want it to aggravate the problem. I would like to see a dermatologist but I don't have insurance to cover it right now. Hopefully will change soon.

Again, Thanks!

I used to wash my make up brushes about once a week with antibacterial dish soap and warm water.I don't think you really need alcohol.

I understand about the dermatologist.I got lucky when someone recommended mine, and he doesn't charge a lot for people without insurance.I have been to some who charged outrageous prices just for the visit and then sent me home saying to "wash my face more".:mad::mad:

There is a great book you could read called HEALING ADULT ACNE by Richard G. Fried. The guy who wrote it is a well known dermatologist who was on Oprah. He gives you all the options from natural things to try, over the counter stuff, and prescriptions and other medical treatments. It really helped me a lot.:)

Loestrin 24 is a great low-hormone birth control. It only has 4 placebo days, so it usually causes shorter perioRAB and less fluctuation in your hormone levels which sometimes cause acne. My other suggestion is a very simple one, try an antibacterial body wash on your face instead of the harsher face washes. To make sure it's antibacterial, look for Triclosan as the active ingredient on the back. Some acne-fighting face washes have Triclosan in them, but in higher percentages than body wash, so they can dry your skin out too much sometimes.

Switching birth control or going off of it can DEFINITELY cause acne. I'm on Orthotricyclen Lo, and it has helped a bit. Do you have sensitive skin? If so, you need to be careful what products you use. I personally cannot use benzoyl peroxide products. You may want to try tea tree oil or sulfur based products.

Using organic based skin care helped me out some. However, ultimately what has helped me the most is finding a good dermatologist. As others have said, it takes some hunting! When I was younger, I had one who just tried me on every prescription possible, including Accutane, and I STILL have scars from all of it. The one I found now listened to my concerns and acted accordingly. She didn't try to push anything on me.

I'm using Azelex at night and Clindamycin Phosphate in the morning. This has helped me a lot (I'm seeing improvement every day!), but you should certainly find a skin care routine tailored to your neeRAB.

If you don't want to see a derm, you may also want to go to Sephora or Lush and talk to the skin consultants and try out various samples. Both of those stores sell quality products, and I definitely saw improvement before I just decided to go back to a new derm. I personally like Peter Thomas Roth products.
