As a 20 year old who is purchasing health insurance for the first time, I clearly need a cheap policy that fits my lifestyle, which is healthy, but active, meaning potential for greater injury, so need to save as much as I can. My qoutes have a check box for smoker or non smoker. If a smoker, rates almost double just for checking yes.
I've never been a cheap cigarette smoker, but I do smoke hand rolled cigars frequently. The health risks of cigar smoking exist, but are blown way out of proportion by the anti smoking lobby and the public opinion that hand rolled aged tobacco is the same as purposely addictive cigarette filled with tar, nicotene and almost NO tobacco comes directly from the propaganda of the antismoking lobby.
So, I don't feel that cigar smokers should have to pay double the rate. That said, how does the insurance company know who is and isn't a smoker. Clearly people aren't just going to check the "Charge me double box."
And on that note, smoker free employers, how do they know who is and isn't smoking? Unless their going to hire a bunch of spies for everyone.
If I check "Non smoker" how will the insurance company be the wiser?
Neither I, nor any cigar smoker I know smokes addictively. There are no addicting additives to cigars, and you smoke them to savor the tastes of the fine tobacco, mush like you would enjoy a fine wine.
