Most cases of acid reflux/GERD are from too LITTLE stomach acid, not too much. Forget the "purple pill" (whose side effects can kill btw) and try apple cider vinegar -- 1 teaspoon twice a day, mixed in water (full glass).

Also, DGL licorice tablets (look up online), taken 10 minutes before meals to soothe and heal the lining of your throat and guts.

AND then there is Pine Nut oil.....

Try these remedies (not all at once, one at a time altho honestly, all are natural so I dont believe the corabo can harm u).

Forget the drug companies and their disgusting propaganda/commericals....

This is a very annoying and at times, painful, condition (i know, 10 years of VERY NOT MINOR suffering, starting in my late 20s), that is easily treated without DRUGS.

Hi Farmgirl:

I am now trying the apple cider vinegar. It is not one hundred percent effective but seems to be as effective as taking Zantac. I get hours of relief followed by perioRAB when I still experience heartburn and have to take an antiacid. I do take DGL and find it soothing. Other things I have found soothing are coconut juice/water and almond milk.

Some information was released today in the news discussing reviews of several articles that just came out discussing the risks of long term PPI use, i.e., increased risk of fractures and infections after three years. I hope doctors start discussing these side effects with their patients. My doctor surely didn't when she handed me my first prescription of PPI's three years ago.

I have been hearing all the problems with taking PPIs. It is scary.
I tried that apple/vinegar and having LPR, it made my throat worse, got more mucus, etc. May not work with LPR.

Actually, that's not true. SOME people have acid reflux like symptoms that are the result of too little stomach acid (hypochlorhydria), but it is a small percentage.

Most cases of acid reflux are the result of an incompetent Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) - a physical deformity that results in acid refluxing from the digestive tract into the esophagus and lower respiratory tract.

I would agree that drugs are not a cure-all for reflux. Far too many people take the drugs without making the necessary lifestyle changes, and their symptoms get worse over time. The drugs can help your body to heal but the best way to control and manage reflux is with significant lifestyle changes and the sparing use of medication.

I think this is exactly the remedy (not cure) for heartburn and reflux. It is the sparing use of medication to control flareups along with lifestyle and diet changes (along with natural remedies) to control symptoms. I am convinced there is no cure, but that the symptoms can be managed if we carefully listen to our bodies, eliminate irritants (different ones for different people) and include fooRAB and supplements (different ones for different people) that are soothing to the GI system. But well said!

Why is it that I never had heartburn before taking this drug? I was put on this 8+ years ago because the endoscopy I had then showed a little reflux. No one ever suggested to me about diet and lifestyle changes....just "here, take this and keep taking it. There's no long term problems with it". About 4-1/2 months ago I decided to stop cold turkey and I experienced my first bout(s) of heartburn several times a day. Even though I knew about the rebound, I eventually went back to the pills because I hadn't had a recent test or have a doctor give me the green light to do it.

I don't believe my LES is physically deformed. Wouldn't it have been that way since birth? The LES neeRAB acid to tell it to close properly. I believe that from taking these acid suppressing meRAB all these years and of course, eating too much junk food, my LES became very relaxed. While I have suppressed acid all these years, I think I still had reflux of food at times and as long as the LES is so relaxed I will.

I am having another EGD on Tuesday and I pray that everything is OK. If so, my next step is to see a Naturopathic Doctor and see what she has to say.

I want to scream it to the world..."Only take these drugs as a last resort!" I wish I knew about all this years ago.

I don't think the LES is necessarily physically deformed but there must be reasons it works sometimes and not others because otherwise we would have reflux and heartburn 24/7. There may be a few of those people out there, but thankfully most of us don't have heartburn round the clock.

There is so little research funded with natural supplements because I guess they don't make the big bucks. I have read that the Apple Cider Vinegar and calcium citrate/magnesium supplements can help "tighten" the LES, but I don't know what that means. That is basically what I am now using and it seems to work along with digestive enzymes and probiotics here and there. But what is their mechanism of action? I really don't know. Maybe others here who have read up on this can point us to sources. Maybe there is a chemist in the group who knows or can theorize why on earth would ACV and calcium/magnesium work in easing heartburn symptoms.
