Headset won't work unless if I'm on skype!?

I recently purchased a new headeset for my computer. It worked for about a week, and I was happy. But now, I can only hear sound come out of it when I am connected to a skype conversation! If I am talking on skype; I can hear the other person, I can watch youtube videos, I can listen to music, anything. It's annoying me alot because I have to be talking to someone to watch my tv shows, but I can't because it would be rude to ignore them :P. Anyway.. all help you can give is apreciated
