Does anyone have any experience with or information about HEADACHE after lurabar surgery?? My MIL had a PLIF at L4-5 about a month ago and has developed major head pain/ache. The doctor first tried to just pass it off, but it is apparent it is more serious, so he has her back at the hospital today performing tests. This lady is tough -- she didn't take any pain meRAB after her fusion, but this really has her complaining and miserable. Any thoughts??

Hi MM,
I don't know, but maybe because she didn't take any pain meRAB, she's just pushed herself over the edge, stress-wise. I know if I'm in a lot of pain for an extended period of time, I can get a headache from it. It's the result of the tension. Even a tough person has to have pain from a major surgery like this.

I hope it's nothing serious. Please let us know what they find out.

:( Emily

MM, first of all, my heart and prayers go out to your MIL...Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with back surgeries but am wondering about a few possibilities. Is she experiencing any neck pain, along with the severe head pain? Are the doctor(s) going to perform a MRI on any of her spinal areas? Have they performed any x-rays? Did they rule out a "spinal headache?" I am sorry for all of the questions but am trying to learn more about her condition. I know that whenever I started experiencing severe muscle spasms in my neck that I began having migraines for the first time. I prayed for my "old" back pain back, instead of having to go through those severe spasms and debilitating migraines. Come to find out, I have DDD in my upper cervical spine, as well as my lower lurabar. I pray that they find out what is wrong and that it will be easily treatable. Please continue to keep us all updated! Also, be sure to take good care of yourself, as well.

It does sound like there is a problem with a spinal leak. I wonder if there is a problem with the hardware?? I am glad they are running tests. Please keep us posted and I am praying.

She went back to the hospital and has had at least one additional MRI. I'm not sure what other tests were done. The hardware is all intact. She feels very tired and has a horrendous headache. They sent her home with a prescription for prednisone and told her they do not believe the pain is related to her fusion. I find that really hard to believe!!

MM, I will continue to lift your MIL up in prayer! I pray that the medication will give her some much needed relief. I agree with you that it does seem odd that they don't suspect it has anything to do with the surgery. Please continue to keep us updated about her condition! Take care
