Head injury?? Advice/help please...

Hi everyone... My husband and I just got back from the beach with our 6 year old son and while we were there we thought it would be fun to invest in some boogie boards. It was fun... at first, but then when the waves started to get really rough and I wasn't using my head enough to figure out that I should get out of the water, so a giant wave klobbered me and my boogie board hit me right on the side of my head and I just started doing summer saults in the water. It yanked my shoulder out of joint a little bit, but I wasn't as concerned with that as I am that I might have gotten a head injury from the board hitting me with the impact of the wave. I've been more tired than usual and I have had a few headaches, but I also did just get back from vacation which is tiring and it's that time of the month for me so those could be causing that as well. Plus I've been worrying that I did something to my head when that happened anyway. Do you guys think I'm ok or do you think I should be worried? I got right up and got out of the water and other than feeling shaken like I had the wind knocked out of me I was fine. All of this happened on Wednesday and it's now Saturday. Any advice or help would be appreciated. I'm worrying a lot about it and it's driving my husband crazy!! Thank you :)

Boogie boarding is awesome fun, but you do have to be careful! Sorry about your accident. Did you ever lose consciousness? Have you passed out or been REALLY dizzy? Are your pupils the same size? Have you had any nausea? Head injuries are rather hard to diagnose without some neurological testing, CT scan, etc. If you are still concerned and unable to take your mind off this possible injury, why not call your doctor and be checked out to relieve your worry? You'll feel much better when you know you're really ok.

Boogie boards are designed to be soft enough to avoid causing injury, but anything can happen. If you have concerns, definately see your doctor. I wish you well.

I didn't notice any dizziness, brusing, lumps, or pain in my head except that my jaw hurt a little bit, but only for a few hours. My shoulders and arms were very sore, but now they just seem to be kind of stiff so I'm trying to stretch more frequently. A friend of ours that is an avid surfer said that he highly doubts anything would be wrong or I would've noticed by now, but I keep reading on the internet and it says that head injurys can take weeks to show up. I'm guessing you'd have to have a pretty substantial head injury though and bodyboards are made out of that compressed foam stuff so it shouldn't have been that hard. I don't know, it's making me nervous, but I hate to run to the doctor about it. If I just wasn't such a worrier...:(

i would not be so concerned about the actual board itself hitting you like that but more like the impact of that wave that accompanied it too. do you recall whether or not your neck actually whipped backwards or even to the side when that impact occured? just given that you have the current symptoms you do right now, could indicate more of a neck type of injury more than actual head injury itself? if this persists, and it has already been a few days here, i would at the very least see your primary for an eval and possible x ray at the very minimum. this would at least, with a c spine series, check out the vertebral alignment. if this lasts longer, or you show new symptoms like in the arms or hands(numbness tingling pain), an MRI of that c spine area may be the best way to really rule out possible c spine injury here.

the forces involved by just being hit by waves can and do cause people some good neck injurys in some cases. it all comes down to how much real force was involved, how you were hit, and what your c spine/neck area did upon that hard impact. a really good friend of mine and his brand new wife went to hawaii on their honeymoon and he came home with a herniated disc in his c spine after he was just hit by a good wave at the beach one day. this is just one area that needs evaluating considering everything you stated here. i would just make an appt to get this done. better safe than sorry, ya know? please let us know how you are doing.
