So I believe I have heard its been done but have yet to try it. Can you use an HDMI cable to hook up to your tv and the audio (red & white cables) to go to your receiver? Will both work if they are connected in the xbox at the same time? also do you have to pop off the shell from the av connector so that there is room for the HDMI and av cables?
that is what i am currently doing, i just have HDMI from xbox to tv and have video and sound

but I want my sound to come out on a receiver with surround sound and need to use only the sound for the receiver and the video on the tv
i have a Vizio 42" SVT Model and I cant quite remember the receiver because I let my friend borrow it because I could not use it in my former residence but will be getting it back soon but I know its an older Yamaha and I got it a year and half ago
is TOSLINK as special optical cable? or is any optical cable usuable in this instance?

Did you mean Vizio 42" XVT?

Also most Yamaha av receivers had a optical audio out. So if TV has it also you can get the wire since the av receiver is not in your possession.

But anyhow you do it since HDMI carries both sound and picture your going to have to pretty much mute your TV so don't get the echo affect from having both the sound coming from your TV and surround sound. That's what I have to do and everything is hooked up using HDMI.

PS: If you did mean VIZIO - SV420XVT - 42" LCD TV - 1080p then yes you TV has it I looked up the specs for ya.

1 x SPDIF output ( TOSLINK ) - rear.
You need a TOSLINK cable.
