so i got my PS3 today and the first thing i tried to do was hook it up to the web..i got the 60gb so it has the wireless built in, so i figure wtf, it should be easy, as it was really easy w/ my wii, so i got to the network settings, set it all up for wireless, it picked up the connection just fine, and i chose the "easy" setting, so everything else was configured pretty much, but here's the problem...when it did the test, it found the ip addy just fine, but it went to connect there was an error, code 80710102, and it says: an error occured while resolving the name with the server...anybody know wtf that means, i'm no computer genius, so please help me out

thanks

It's a DNS problem.

Can you give us some more info about what you're using (devices), how it's setup, how far your router is from the PS3, etc.

the router is a linksys wireless g 2.4ghz, i dont know how its setup, my bro is the one who knows about this stuff and he's out of the country lol, and its about a good 24ft from the router....whats a DNS problem? i'm such a noob

**edit** i even went out and bought an ethernet cable and hooked it up that way and it still had the same problem

You don't seem to be the only person experiencing this error code. Since it connected, and found the IP address (and you did the easy setup), that tells us that the network is setup DHCP....automatically optaining IP addresses, instead of using static ones. So it's not a problem with the IP's. After that, it checks for the DNS (Domain Name System). It's what translates domain names to IPs. This is where it stopped....so it's pointing towards that.

There doesn't seem to be one sure fire way to fix this issue. Because there are many variables.

The first thing I would do, is go to Linksys' website, and download the newest firmware drivers for your router, and update it. If that doesn't work...you may be looking at messing around with some settings in your router's admin panel.

i went to linksys website and there wasnt any available driver downloads, there's firmware, but i dunno if that has anything to do with it or not

Okay, yeah...download the firmware, and have it update.

i dl'd it and i'm going to try to update it, but it wont let me..here's what it says:

1) Before you start, be sure you are using a PC that is connected to the WRT54G
via a wired (Ethernet) connection.
2) Open your web browser (e.g., Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.)
3) In the Address bar, type in the IP address of your router. The default IP
address is 192.168.1.1.
4) Leave the username blank and enter your password. The default password is "admin",
all lower case.
5) Click on the Administration tab.
6) Click on Firmware Upgrade.
7) Browse for the firmware file that you have just extracted. The file name should end
in .bin
8) Click the Upgrade button.
9) The router will begin its upgrade routine. Do not power off or unplug the router until
the process is completed. This process may take up to 5 minutes to co

i copied and pasted the ip addy into the address bar like it says and it wont do anything, it'll just take me to an error page lol

your router is screaming, "WTF is this new damn device" and the Domain Name Server is saying "I can't believe this shit, I'm not resloving your dumbass name into an IP address, do it your fucking self" and your own brain should be telling you, pull the power cord out of the router, wait 10 seconds and plug back in, Walllah! everything should be fine....
