DVM In The Making!

Today I purchased a male Crowntail and I have him in a 5 gallon filtered aquarium.
I noticed that the current from the filter is pushing him around and only allowing him to be at the bottom of one side of the tank.
Right now the filter is unplugged, but I am wondering what I can do to solve this problem.
I believe I have the smallest filter size available.
